An interview with Norway’s progressive metal band Leprous. The entire band was kind enough to sit down with FourteenG, on their stop in Chicago. Just part of a mini North American tour, right off the heels of their slot on this year’s ProgPower. Dare we call them avant garde but as their album covers suggest, each is a bottled time capsule of their progression as seasoned musicians. So, why haven’t we heard more of them?! Maybe after this little stint of the U.S., the secret will be out and they won’t be our underground cult favorite anymore. Wait… maybe that’s a good thing! Without further ado, here’s a fun “getting to know you” piece of prog’s unlikely likely rock stars.

Oi! It’s Riot Fest eh!
It is a pleasure to have guests grace our pages but no truer words were ever uttered than having Samm Waatsen (ex-punk rocker/pre-law) write a quick synopsis of this year’s Riot Fest in Chicago. His flare for storytelling is epic! His “as if you were there” delivery is humorous yet heartfelt. Please, enjoy!
Last year, on a grim November morning, I jumped in my wife’s car, popped in an unofficial Deathside discography, and hauled royal keister down to a West Loop rehearsal space called “the Garage.” My mission? To buy pre-sale vip tickets to Riot Fest… which would occur 10 months later.
The Devil’s Rejects
It was February 6th 2011 at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago. Hangin’ with the usual suspects. Good times were afoot. Libations were had. Getting ready to sway to whatever DevilDriver was about to spew forth. We take our spot, stage right, next to the speakers. It begins…
“Um, where the fuck is Miller?”
Jonathan Miller, the bassist. The dude we meet on DD’s first tour in the early 2ks. That dude who helped lay down that rhythmic foundation since the beginning of their conception. That full steam ahead, 5-ton truck, ready to assault your ear cavity. The one who didn’t treat us women in the industry like a piece of ass in shoes?! Yeah, that dude. He was gone.
PREPARE FOR HELL TOUR

You need some Religion!

Heavy Metal? On Life Support
After commenting on the article featuring Gene Simmons about rock being dead, I had to think about the genre we’ve been covering since 2003.
Metal. Now, over the years we’ve evolved as people. All 3 of us live our own lives, we’ve done different things, and taken different paths to sustain ourselves. E still does photography, Karma is still editing, and I’m still editing and writing articles as well as fiction, however, metal is no longer the main focus. Why you ask? Well, because my friends, metal is clearly on life support.
So, your city sold out? Time for a road trip!
King Diamond would like to welcome Jess and the Ancient Ones as the opening act for the North American tour this fall. The occult rock group from Kuopio, Finland, was personally selected by King Diamond himself to be the openers on the tour.
Jess and the Ancient Ones is an occult rock band from Kuopio, Finland. This seven-headed entity was given birth by Thomas Corpse and Thomas Fiend, its purpose being the exploration of magical realms beyond the mundane. The band’s lyrical concept is based upon the personal occult experiences of the writers, which combined with music, creates a strong mystical atmosphere. With the vocal talent Jess as their frontwoman and three guitars in the lineup, JATAO draw inspiration from heavy metal and rock groups of the classic era, such as Mercyful Fate, Roky Erickson, Iron Maiden and Abba. Gene Simmons Claims Rock is Dead – My Take? Not Really
Recently, Gene Simmons from the iconic rock band KISS had these thoughts about the state of rock and roll. ROCK IS DEAD. You can read the full article he did with his own son in this link.
In this interview, he stated that file sharing is one of the main reasons rock isn’t popular anymore. He also states there aren’t many acts or performers who stand the test of time because of greedy men in white suits making and shaping bands along with teenagers who think they are entitled to get their music for free. Gene has a point however I don’t think rock is entirely gone.
