In Flames 16 May 2013 LIVE at Bottom Lounge, CHICAGO

Our Random Fandom installment for Spring involves In Flames. They finally reach the end of a touring cycle for their 2011 release of “Sounds Of A Playground Fading”. How nice of them to play Chicago one final time before they hit the studios for a new album. Something tells us that our friends at Local Option Brewery had something to do with IF’s showcased show.

“Schools a job but you don’t get paid!”

Who’s lyric is that? Do you know how fucking old that lyric is? Let’s see. Beneath the Wheel on the album Thrash Zone in 1989! What the hell, man? I was in high school in 1989. Yes that means I’m an ol’ ass mother fucker just like most of the cats that attended the 18 and over show at HoB on a freaking Wednesday. Wait a minute. Don’t most of us metalheads at this age, well you know, my age, have jobs, families, you know responsibilities? Yep, but that’s okay, even ol’ asses like us can enjoy a metal show and with bills like this; Suicidal, DRI, and Waking the Dead, we get to put on our gymshoes, shorts, tie scarves around our heads, and mosh like youngins, in the pit.

Sevendust/Coal Chamber/Lacuna Coil/Candlelight Red at MOJOES JOLIET

sevendust

Wait? Does that look like a bill from the late nineties? Yes it  does but it isn’t. Instead, it was the lineup at Mojoes in Joliet  on Tuesday April 9th. Actually, when I first saw this bill I said, what, Sevendust and Coal Chamber touring together? I thought Armageddon was just around the corner but apparently, the bands have put aside all differences to join forces on a nice sized tour, playing nearly sold out shows.

Crashdiet/Crucified Barbara at DOUBLE DOOR

Crashdiet/Crucified Barbara

Double Door

When I attended the show on April 4th at the Double Door, I attempted to remember the last time I’d been there. I talked with E, asking her repeatedly about other instances besides Neurotic Outsiders almost twenty years ago was the only instance. Damn. That long? So you could imagine how excited I was to see a band I’d been introduced to by fellow author Melanie Tushmore called Crashdiet.

House of Blues CHICAGO

Industrial is back! Perhaps it is or maybe we’ve just taken a trip back in time when the music was more electronic, heavy, with some obscene lyrics and guys and or gals wearing slick leather.

A little bit of both then.

The show at House of Blues was electric, filled to capacity to see KMFDM, and band that never disappoints their fans. Dimmed lights, some in red and blue, crowds moshing to heavy beats provided by one of the masterful bands in metal history. Their sound, never truly duplicated well, has lasted for nearly three decades and Sascha and company don’t show any signs of slowing down.

Most of the set was from the newest album, Kunst, the band did manage to play a couple of favorites. One of mine, Son of a Gun from XTort which always got me going back in the day. I always appreciated KMFDM’s sound, the rebellious lyrics and the kind of in your face attitude because they pretty much do whatever the hell they want. And when you’ve been around almost 30 years, you can do that.

Openers, Chant and Legion Within were also entertaining. Chant, a two piece from Texas where both members play drums and garbage cans. Yes I said, garbage cans. The whole set featured red lights, members wearing clothing that might’ve looked like something Fred Flinstone would wear but hey, who am I to judge. Funny attire aside, I liked Chant and thought they were a perfect fit for this tour.

Legion Within was also impressive. Though they sounded more like a rock/metal outfit instead of the industrial band, I enjoyed their energy and wouldn’t mind seeing them again. Of course the outfits grabbed me. Matching suits, a lead singer in tight leather. Yeah I had to look. *laughs* Truly an enjoyable night, one I wished wouldn’t end.

As usual, Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid or Kill Motherfuvkin Depeche Mode rocked the house. Oops… No we’re supposed to say they sucked.

Here’s to 30 more years, God willing!

Gojira’s Mario Duplantier Drumming at The Rave in Milwaukee 19August2012

FourteenG has remained supporters of Gojira since our first interview in 2006 at The Rave in Milwaukee. Six years later, we return to the scene of the crime. This time, less green, a little older and much wiser!

During these years we have also witnessed the progression of Gojira’s sound as well as craftsmanship. Drummer, Mario Duplantier, has morphed into a confident and established musician in his own right being recognized around the world as one of heavy metal’s best modern drummers with accolades rivaling other basher titans of metal’s elite. Enough boasting. Hear it for yourselves. ~ek
